POLICE GRADUATION New Officers Part of Administration's Effort To Put 100,000 Cops to the Nation's Streets Attorney General Janet Reno is in Los Angeles today to deliver the keynote address to the graduating class of the Los Angeles Police Department. Eighty-nine Los Angeles police officers, all of them funded through the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS), are graduating. The new officers are funded under President Clinton's 1994 Crime Act, which is paying for 100,000 additional police and sheriffs' deputies on the nation's streets -- nearly a 20 percent increase in America's police ranks. Los Angeles City and Los Angeles County have been awarded more than $81 million to hire and redeploy 1,689 officers. Of that, more than $70 million, 1,559 officers, has been awarded to the Los Angeles Police Department. In California, $216 million of funding has been announced to hire and redeploy 4,654 additional officers to the street.
