pre> FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AG TUESDAY, JANUARY 28, 1997 (202) 616-2777 TDD (202) 514-1888 RENO MEETS WITH MEXICAN ATTORNEY GENERAL MADRAZO WASHINGTON, D.C. -- On Tuesday, January 28, Attorney General Janet Reno and Mexican Attorney General Jorge Madrazo had their first working meeting since Mr. Madrazo was appointed to his position in December of last year. The purpose of the meeting was to continue the development of a close working relationship between the Attorneys General and their staffs and to provide a forum for the reaffirmation of their mutual commitment to enhanced cooperation in bilateral law enforcement and criminal justice initiatives. Attorneys General Reno and Madrazo took the opportunity of the meeting to recognize the notable improvements experienced in the U.S.-Mexico law enforcement relationship over the past few years and to make plans for future coordinated activities, particularly with regard to counternarcotics and fugitive matters. Both Attorneys General also acknowledged that, despite past successes, there is a continuing and persistent need to increase the allocation of effort and resources to the common fight against domestic, transnational, and organized crime. The meeting concluded with a mutual pledge by the Attorneys General to the continuation of frequent and direct communication and to the aggressive pursuit of justice on both sides of the border. ### 97-037
