       THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE TODAY ISSUED THE FOLLOWING
            STATEMENT ON THE SAMUEL SHEINBEIN MATTER:

     "The Department of Justice is working closely with
authorities in the Department of State, the Office of the State's
Attorney for Montgomery County, and the Israeli Ministry of
Justice in an effort to pursue all options to ensure that Samuel
David Sheinbein is brought to justice. 
 
     "The U.S. Government has requested Samuel Sheinbein's
provisional arrest with a view to extradition from Israel, and
our preference would be to have him stand trial in Maryland. 

     "However, if extradition is not possible, we will cooperate
with Israeli authorities to the extent that they are able to
prosecute Samuel Sheinbein in Israel."
