STATEMENT OF ATTORNEY GENERAL JANET RENO

WASHINGTON, D.C. ­ Attorney General Janet Reno today issued the following statement on the death of Governor Lawton Chiles.

"Governor Chiles was a remarkable public servant. Over the years as a U.S. Senator and Governor, he worked ceaselessly for the people of Florida and for all Americans.

"Governor Chiles put principle above partisanship and reason above rancor. He fought for the uninsured, for infants, for the elderly and for minorities. His legacy is long and his impact great.

"He was a great Senator, great Governor, great Floridian, and a wonderful friend. I will miss him dearly. My condolences go out to his wife, Rhea, and his entire family."
