TAX DIVISION NAMES NEW

DEPUTY ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL

FOR CRIMINAL TAX ENFORCEMENT

Washington, D.C. -- The Department of Justice today announced the selection of Paula M. Junghans to serve as a Deputy Assistant Attorney General of the Tax Division in the Department of Justice.

Junghans, whose appointment became effective on October 13, 1998, will be responsible for overseeing the Division's criminal enforcement program. She previously was a partner at the Baltimore, Maryland based firm of Martin, Junghans, Snyder & Bernstein, P.A. A seasoned litigator, Junghans has practiced criminal and civil tax law for over 20 years.

"Paula possesses the attributes that are necessary to lead our criminal program successfully," said Loretta Argrett, head of the Department's Tax Division. "We are fortunate that she is joining the Tax Division's management."

Junghans, co-author of Federal Tax Litigation, is a frequent lecturer on tax and financial crimes issues for numerous bar associations, tax conferences, continuing legal education seminars, and the Department of Justice. She succeeds Mark E. Matthews, who left the Tax Division for private practice earlier this year.
