STATEMENT OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL

WASHINGTON, D.C. ­ Our deepest sympathies go out to Dr. Slepian's family. This is a tragedy for the Slepian family and their community in Western New York and neighboring Canada.

This murder is an outrage, and we cannot tolerate this kind of violence. We will do whatever it takes to track down and prosecute whoever is responsible for this murder.

Federal law enforcement is working with state and local authorities as well as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who have been investigating similar incidents that have occurred in Canada over the last several years.

We are actively investigating the possibility that Dr. Slepian was murdered because of his work providing abortion services.

The federal government will continue its vigilant defense of constitutionally protected rights to provide and to obtain reproductive health services.
