STATEMENT OF ATTORNEY GENERAL JANET RENO

Today we mark another milestone on the road to access. Our destination is a society where everyday life is open to all Americans, including those with disabilities.

Thanks to new rules issued by Secretary Slater, bus riders with disabilities will gain equal access to our nationwide, intercity bus network. Under the new rules, our nation's largest bus companies will ensure that all new buses have wheelchair lifts and proper devices for securing wheelchairs safely. By the year 2012, disabled bus riders will enjoy full access to our nation's highways. Until that time, they will be able to request an accessible bus on 48 hours notice.

Every American enjoys the freedom to travel. It is a fundamental right. The Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA, ensures people with disabilities can enjoy that right as well.

Without accessible transportation, disabled bus riders cannot get to their jobs, visit their families or tour our nation's splendors.

By phasing in the requirements and accommodating smaller bus companies, the Department of Transportation has demonstrated the common sense approach that has made the ADA a tremendous success. Since the law was enacted, the Department of Justice has taken a similar approach, balancing equal access with the economic concerns of American business.

I look forward to working with Secretary Slater building a true partnership that includes the Federal government, the bus industry, other businesses, and people with disabilities. Together, we can make easy, independent travel for people with disabilities an everyday experience.
