attempting to evade his federal income taxes for 15 years, the Justice Department announced
today. Lloyd E. Darland was charged in a four-count indictment with evading the payment of his
1981 through 1992 income taxes by concealing his ownership interest in assets and income
which could have been used by the IRS to satisfy his tax liabilities. He was also charged with
evading the assessment of his 1993 through 1995 income taxes by concealing income earned
during those years from the IRS. According to the indictment, Darland generated income during the years 1981 through
1995 by various means, including a tax return preparation business, an Amway distributorship,
and a federal pension. The indictment alleges that Darland has not filed a federal income tax
return for any year from 1981 through 1995, despite owing taxes totaling approximately
$260,229 for this time period. The maximum penalty for each count is five years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. 99-044
