STATEMENT OF THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In response to media inquiries, the Justice Department today issued the following statement relating to Peter Knight.

"Attorney General Janet Reno today determined that there is no basis to commence a preliminary investigation into allegations against Peter Knight, former Campaign Manager of the Clinton-Gore Reelection Campaign. Those allegations were contained in a Report prepared by the Majority Staff of the House Committee on Commerce and sent to the Department on December 15.

"Reno reached that determination after concluding that she does not possess specific and credible information that Knight, a covered person under the Independent Counsel Act, may have violated federal criminal law."
