DELAWARE COUPLE ARRAIGNED ON TAX CHARGES
WASHINGTON, D.C. - A Middletown, Delaware couple was arraigned today on tax charges before a federal magistrate in Wilmington, the Justice Department announced.
The arraignment of Alex and Gladys Dahmen, follows a 10-count indictment handed down by a federal grand jury on June 22, 1999, charging them with preparing and filing false corporate and individual federal income tax returns.
According to the indictment, the Dahmens, who own and operate Dahmen's Wholesale & Export, Inc., in Middletown, a licensed used car dealership whose primary business is the export of used automobiles to Chile, assisted in the preparation and filing of false corporate and individual federal income tax returns for themselves, Dahmens Wholesale & Export, Inc., and for their sons Osvaldo and Glenn Dahmen for the years 1992, 1993 and 1994.
During a June 30, 1999 initial appearance, U.S. Magistrate Mary Pat Thynge conditioned the couple's release pending trial on the execution of a $5,000 unsecured performance bond and the surrender of their passports.
The United States is represented by Nanette Davis and Eric Witiw, trial attorneys with the Department's Tax Division.
