JUSTICE DEPARTMENT OFFICIAL WINS HONOR FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE IN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
WASHINGTON - Richard C. Smith, Counsel to the Director of the Executive Office for United States Attorneys (EOUSA), at the Department of Justice will be awarded the Arthur S. Flemming Award for outstanding service in federal government. Smith will receive his award at the 50th Annual Arthur S. Flemming Awards Program at the George Washington University on June 10, 1999. He was chosen by the Arthur S. Flemming Awards Commission for his achievements in drug enforcement strategy and working to develop policy on issues such as immigration and civil rights.
Each year, 11 winners are selected from all areas of federal service. The award is presented to those individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to federal government. Past Flemming award recipients include: Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan (1965) and Elizabeth Hanford Dole (1971).
Smith joined the Justice Department in 1992 after serving four years as Assistant State Attorney in Florida. He is originally from Atlanta and received a B.A. degree in Political Science from Alabama A & M University in Huntsville, Alabama. Smith received a Masters degree in Public Administration and Judicial Administration from the University of Florida in 1984 and a law degree from the University of Florida in 1987. He is expected to receive his Masters degree in Health Law from the University of Houston Law Center in December of 1999.
Currently, Smith serves on the Task Force on Violence on Health Care Providers, the Church Arsons Task Force, the Hate Crimes Task Force, and various working groups on issues such as police misconduct, racial disparity, and international human rights.
Smith is married to Dr. Sophia Renya Smith, a post doctoral research fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.
