DEPUTY ATTORNEY GENERAL TO ADDRESS NURSING HOME ABUSE

AND NEGLECT PREVENTION CONFERENCE IN PHILADELPHIA

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Deputy Attorney General Eric H. Holder and other law enforcement and government officials, including U.S. Attorney Michael Stiles and Pennsylvania Attorney General Michael Fisher, will address the Northeast Regional Nursing Home Abuse and Neglect Prevention Conference on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. at the United States Attorney's Office in Philadelphia.

After the opening remarks, Holder and other officials will be available for a media briefing from 10:00 to 10:15 a.m. The first sessions of the conference, "The History and Impact of Enforcement" with Catherine Hawes, Senior Research Scientist with Myers Research Institute for the Aging, and the "Impact of Abuse and Neglect" with Senora Russell, whose father died as a result of inadequate treatment in a nursing home, will also be open to the media.

The three-day conference will focus on increased scrutiny and coordination to deter abuse and neglect and promote appropriate care for the vulnerable residents of nursing homes. In addition to stepping up law enforcement efforts to protect America's elderly and taxpayers, the conference also will serve to launch State Working Groups that will promote these efforts on an on-going basis. Conference participants include federal, state and local law enforcement officials, regulators, inspectors and advocates.
