ATTORNEY GENERAL RENO, SOUTH AFRICAN MINISTER OF JUSTICE
TO SIGN EXTRADITION AND MUTUAL LEGAL ASSISTANCE TREATIES
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Attorney General Janet Reno will meet with the South African Minister of Justice, Penuell Maduna, to sign two treaties on Thursday, September 16, at 2:00 p.m. in Room 5111 of the Main Justice Building.
The first treaty is a new extradition treaty which will replace one dating from 1947 and will enhance both countries' ability to arrest and return fugitives for all crimes which are punishable in both countries. The second treaty, a new mutual legal assistance treaty (MLAT), will be the first of its kind in the southern African region, which will facilitate the exchange of evidence and other law enforcement cooperation.
The press is invited to attend the signing ceremony only. The bilateral meeting following the signing ceremony will be closed to the press.
