The Department of Justice also recently released a commemorative report for the 10th Anniversary, "Enforcing the ADA: Looking Back on a Decade of Progress" highlighting the law's successes. Through the enforcement efforts of the U.S. Department of Justice, hundreds of cities across the country have become more accessible to people with disabilities. Enacted on July 26, 1990, the ADA is a landmark civil rights law that guarantees equal opportunity for the nation's 54 million people with disabilities. The law celebrates its 10th anniversary on Wednesday, July 26th. One of the most comprehensive civil rights laws ever enacted, the ADA's requirements apply to more than 6 million businesses and more than 80,000 units of state and local government. The law covers: public accommodations (stores, restaurants, hotels, theaters, service establishments); activities of state and local governments; private sector employment; public and private transportation; and, telecommunications.
