The number of older Americans and nursing home residents is projected to more than double in the next 30 years. To address this demographic change, the Department is assessing the role of law enforcement in protecting these vulnerable citizens. As part of this effort, the Department launched its Nursing Home Initiative, which focuses on enhanced enforcement and training; outreach to resident advocates, industry, healthcare and public safety professionals, academics, and others; new legislation to address gaps in federal law; improved inter-governmental and multi-disciplinary coordination; and formation of State Working Groups to continue and replicate these efforts at the state and local levels. The Department also sponsored four regional multi-disciplinary Abuse and Neglect Prevention Conferences and a meeting of State Working Group representatives to increase coordination and enforcement, deter abuse and neglect, and promote quality care for nursing home residents.
