ATTORNEY GENERAL ASHCROFT WELCOMES WHITE HOUSE NOMINEE

FOR ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL OF THE CIVIL DIVISION


WASHINGTON, D.C. - Attorney General John Ashcroft today welcomed President George W. Bush's announcement of his intention to nominate Robert McCallum to be Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division.

"Robert McCallum will lead the Civil Division with distinction," Ashcroft said. "The Department will benefit greatly from his experience and commitment. I look forward to working with him."

McCallum is currently a partner at the Atlanta firm of Alston & Bird, where he specializes in civil litigation with an emphasis on appellate practice, commercial real estate litigation, insurance class action litigation and medical malpractice defense. He served as Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Georgia from 1979-1987, representing the Georgia Department of Transportation in eminent domain litigation. He is a frequent lecturer in continuing legal education seminars and has served as the Chair of the Georgia ICLE Appellate Practice Seminar since 1997.

He graduated cum laude from Yale University in 1968 and received his law degree from Yale Law School. He also obtained a second BA with First Class Honors in Jurisprudence from Oxford University on a Rhodes Scholarship.
