ATTORNEY GENERAL JOHN ASHCROFT TO EVALUATE REQUEST

WASHINGTON, DC In response to a letter from the Mayor of Cincinnati received today, Attorney General John Ashcroft issued the following statement. The statement was read by U.S. Attorney Sharon Zealey at a Town Hall meeting this evening in Cincinnati.

"Mayor Charles Luken has requested the assistance of the Justice Department in conducting a review of the patterns, procedures and training of the Cincinnati Police Department.

We are pleased to receive this request and are evaluating it to determine how we may best assist the city of Cincinnati to address and improve the practices, procedures and training of the Police Department. I can assure you that this is a high priority for the Justice Department."
