ATTORNEY GENERAL ASHCROFT WELCOMES PRESIDENT BUSH'S

ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE OFFICIAL


WASHINGTON, D.C. Attorney General John Ashcroft today welcomed President George W. Bush's intention todesignate Terrence S. Donahue to be Acting Administrator of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

"Terry has been instrumental in shaping the juvenile policy at the Department," said Attorney General John Ashcroft. "He brings 25 years of service and a wealth of management experience to the table, making him an excellent leader for our Juvenile Justice Department."

Donahue is currently serving as Senior Advisor for Program Development in the Office of Assistant Attorney General, Office of Justice Programs, United States Department of Justice.

Donahue has been responsible for designing and implementing hundreds of research, demonstration and dissemination programs related to criminal and juvenile justice for which he has received numerous awards and commendations

Among some of his most notable responsibilities at the Office of Justice Programs, were his positions directing the Office of Planning, Management and Budget, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and the Executive Office of Weed and Seed, the latter of which he is considered to be one of the primary architects.

Also, during this period he served in a broad array of roles in the Office of Justice Programs, such as: deputy of two major offices; head of two program divisions; and author of national standards as a social scientist in the National Institute of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. In addition, he directed the National Field Study on Gangs and Gang Violence.

Before coming to Washington D.C. from Indiana he directed and worked in a number of planning and service delivery organizations at the state and local level within the areas of criminal and juvenile justice, public welfare and public recreation.

As a senior career executive, he is currently completing the development and testing of a successful prototypical national initiative entitled," Sustainable Safety and Community Enhancement," and a related software package known as the,"Resource Mapping and Strategic Planning Software Tool." The initiative is focused in three United States Attorney Districts: Arizona, (State of Arizona); the Western District of Michigan, (Benton Harbor); and, the Northen District of Indiana, (Fort Wayne). The goal of the venture is to improve Federal, State and local effectiveness in initiating and sustaining long term responses to crime and related social problems through the coordination and concentration of existing public and private resources without the initial use of Federal discretionary resources.

Mr. Donahue holds an under graduate degree in Arts and Sciences and a masters degree in Public Administration from Indiana University. He and his wife, Jo, a kindergarten teacher, have been married 29 years and have two sons, Ryan and Conor, ages 22 and 18 respectively. They reside in Northern Virginia.
