ATTORNEY GENERAL JOHN ASHCROFT TO PRESENT AWARDS

TO JUSTICE DEPARTMENT EMPLOYEES FROM AROUND THE U.S.


Washington, D.C. - Attorney General John Ashcroft will present awards to 152 Justice Department employees and 20 others at this year's Annual Attorney General Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, August 1, 2001.

Attorney General Ashcroft will present the Justice Department's top award, the Attorney General's Award for Exceptional Service, to a team of investigators, prosecutors and trial attorneys whose efforts netted the largest global settlement of a government fraud case in the Department's history - $928 million in criminal fines, civil penalties and damages against Columbia/HCA, the largest hospital chain in the country, for unlawful billing of Medicare and other government health care programs.

Justice Department employees and others will be recognized for their exceptional heroism and distinguished service, outstanding contributions to cooperative law enforcement and other activities at the 49th Annual Ceremony.
