ATTORNEY GENERAL ASHCROFT WELCOMES WHITE HOUSE

NOMINEE JOHN BROWN FOR DEPUTY ADMINISTRATOR OF
THE DRUG ENFORCEMENT ADMINISTRATION

WASHINGTON, D.C. Attorney General John Ashcroft today welcomed President Bush's announcement of his intention to nominate John Brown to be the Deputy Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration.

"John Brown will serve the Drug Enforcement Administration with distinction and honor," Ashcroft said. "He will be a strong advocate for enforcing our nation's drug laws and preventing drug abuse. The DEA and our nation will be served well by John Brown."

Brown has served as the Special Agent in Charge of the DEA Dallas Field Division since late last year. In this position, he has been responsible for overseeing intelligence operations in North Texas and throughout the state of Oklahoma. Prior to serving in the Dallas Field Division, he was the Director of the El Paso Intelligence Center (EPIC) in El Paso, Texas and served as the DEA's Deciding Official for Disciplinary Matters.

In 1969, he began his career in law enforcement as an officer in the Brockport, New York Police Department, and in 1972 he entered duty as a Special Agent in the U.S. Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (BNDD) at the Buffalo, New York District Office. BNDD is the predecessor agency of the Drug Enforcement Administration. In 1985, Brown became the Resident Agent in Charge of the DEA Resident Office in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. Three years later, he was assigned to the DEA Miami Division as Group Supervisor of the Carribean Enforcement Group, Miami. He went on to serve as Inspector and Senior Inspector in the DEA Office of Professional Responsibility, Southeast office.

Brown received his Bachelor's degree in English and Literature in 1968 from the State University of New York at Brockport. He is married and has two sons.
