STATEMENT BY ATTORNEY GENERAL JOHN ASHCROFT
ON THE CONTINUING DECLINE IN VIOLENT CRIME RATES:
"The significant 10 percent drop in violent crime rates throughout the nation is good news for all Americans, and a credit to the efforts and perseverance of those on the front lines of law enforcement. Firearms crimes have declined significantly, and criminal victimizations are at the lowest point since 1973 -- almost a 50 percent drop over the last 29 years. America's neighborhoods are more safe, and I applaud the men and women who fill the ranks of our local, state and federal law enforcement agencies. Their dedication, bravery and heroism is too often unsung. Going forward, we must remain vigilant in working to reduce crime and make our streets and communities as safe as possible."
