STATEMENT OF ATTORNEY GENERAL JOHN ASHCROFT
ON THE NATIONAL CRIMINAL VICTIMIZATION SURVEY STATISTICS

“I am very pleased to announce the crime rate in our country declined dramatically in every category of both violent crimes and property crimes in 2002, bringing it to the lowest level in 30 years. In 2001 and 2002, the violent crime rate dropped 21% from the previous two-year period. In simple terms, Americans are safer all across our nation.

“The Bureau of Justice Statistics also found an increase in crimes reported to the police, with 49 percent of violent crime and 40 percent of property crime reported, indicating that citizens are more willing to turn to authorities for help. Behind these numbers are dedicated police officers, prosecutors, judges and corrections officers who serve on the front lines every day to make our streets, homes and schools safer. These statistics are a tribute to their work and to all citizens who support them in the fight against crime. But lower crime rates must not lead to complacency. We must continue our vigilance and renew our firm commitment to protect all Americans, bringing to swift and certain justice all those who would inflict pain and harm, and working to create a stronger, safer America.”
