ATTORNEY GENERAL WELCOMES HONORS PROGRAM ATTORNEYS
TO THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE

Washington, D.C. - Attorney General John Ashcroft, joined by Deputy Attorney General Larry D. Thompson, today welcomed newly arrived Honors Program attorneys to the Department of Justice. Each year, the Attorney General personally addresses the incoming Honors Program attorneys and commends them for their commitment to public service.

"You have chosen to serve your nation here at the Department of Justice. I am inspired by the desire of such bright new lawyers to serve the public interest, and I am confident that your experience here will prove to be an outstanding start to your legal career," said Attorney General Ashcroft. "As you embark on careers in the law, you bear the awesome responsibility of understanding, seeking, and defending justice."

The Honors Program is one of the largest and most widely recognized entry-level legal recruitment programs in the nation. Established in 1953, it continuously has served as the Department's recruitment program for outstanding third-year law students, graduate law students, and Judicial Law Clerks. Ten Department components formally participated in the 2001-2002 Honors Program that hired the new attorneys recognized today: the Antitrust Division; the Civil Division; the Civil Rights Division; the Criminal Division; the Environment and Natural Resources Division; the Executive Office For Immigration Review; the Federal Bureau of Prisons; the Immigration and Naturalization Service; the Tax Division; and the United States Trustee Program. Two smaller Department organizations, the Office of Intelligence Policy and Review and the Drug Enforcement Administration, informally participated with each hiring one new attorney. Honors Program attorneys are selected in November each year, and enter on duty between October and December of the following year after graduation from law school or completion of a judicial clerkship.

The 2001-2002 Honors Program attorneys are:
