     STATEMENT OF ASSISTANT ATTORNEY GENERAL FOR CIVIL RIGHTS
     DEVAL L. PATRICK ON TODAY'S DECISION IN THE CITADEL CASE


     WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Court of Appeals for the Fourth
Circuit today upheld a lower court's ruling that South Carolina
and the Citadel denied Shannon Faulkner equal protection under
the Constitution.  The case is Faulkner & United States v. Jones
(Citadel).


     "Shannon Faulkner and other young women deserve an equal
educational opportunity from the state, including admission to
the Corps of Cadets.  We are pleased because today's decision
brings her closer to attaining the protection the Constitution
affords her."
