  DIRECTOR OF JUSTICE DEPARTMENT'S VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN OFFICE
             TO PARTICIPATE IN A SESSION WITH VICTIMS
      OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AT BANGOR CITY HALL ON WEDNESDAY

     Washington, DC -- Bonnie Campbell, in her first trip as
director of the Department of Justice's Violence Against Women
Office, will participate in a "Speak Out" session with victims of
domestic violence at City Hall, in Bangor, on Wednesday, April
19, from 1:30 to 2:30 pm.  Ms. Campbell comes to Bangor to
address the issue of domestic violence as Congress ponders
cutting funds for the 1994 Crime Law and its Violence Against
Women Act.
     At the session, Ms. Campbell will be joining United States
Attorney Jay McCloskey; Francine Stark, the Director of the
Spruce Run Shelter; Sarah Marion, Executive Director of the Rape
Crisis Coalition.  Following the session, Ms. Campbell will hold
a brief media availability in the City Managers Office, adjacent
to the Council Chambers, from 2:30 to 3:00 pm.

     Before participating in the victims "Speak Out" , Ms.
Campbell will tour The Abused Women's Advocacy Project in
Lewiston on Wednesday at 10:00 am.  Ms. Campbell's visit to Maine
is the second stop on a three state tour that also includes Rhode
Island and Vermont.
     The Violence Against Women Office was created to lead the
Administration's effort to implement the Violence Against Women
Act, along with the Department of Health and Human Services.  Ms.
Campbell oversees the Justice Department's efforts to combine new
federal criminal laws with assistance to states and localities to
fight violence against women.
