                 STATEMENT OF ATTORNEY GENERAL JANET RENO

     Five brave, young Drug Enforcement agents -- all in their
30's -- are the latest casualty in our effort to eliminate the
scourge of drugs.  

     From Florida, California, Texas and Washington, D.C., they
died in the distant Peruvian jungle while trying to save the
lives of other young people in America's towns and cities.

     Our heartfelt sympathy goes to their families.  We re-       
commit ourselves to the important work for which they gave their
lives.



(The fact that the five DEA agents did not survive became known
late this afternoon.)
