        ATTORNEY GENERAL, LEGISLATORS AND POLICE REPS TO
     FIGHT FOR COPS PROGRAM IN CAPITOL HILL PRESS CONFERENCE

     Attorney General Janet Reno, Rep. Charles Schumer and other
legislators and representatives of America's police organizations
will hold a press conference today to call on members of the House
of Representatives to defeat any attempts to scrap the crime bill's
program to put 100,000 police on the street.

     The House is scheduled to debate H.R. 728 today, which would
scrap the 100,000 police program and reduce spending on police and
crime prevention by and estimated $2.3 billion.  The President has
pledged to veto any attempt to repeal or undermine the program.
