FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AG THURSDAY, JUNE 29, 1995 (202) 514-2008 TDD (202) 514-1888 ATTORNEY GENERAL RENO AND HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES SECRETARY SHALALA TO ANNOUNCE CREATION OF ADVISORY COUNCIL ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN WASHINGTON, D.C. -- On Thursday, July 13th, Attorney General Janet Reno and Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala will attend a press conference to announce the creation of an Advisory Council on Violence Against Women. Immediately following the announcement, both Attorney General Reno and Secretary Shalala will attend the day-long first meeting of the Advisory Council. The press conference and the meeting are open to print and electronic media. The Advisory Council will provide Attorney General Reno and Secretary Shalala with practical and general policy advice concerning the implementation of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), which was enacted as part of the 1994 Crime Bill. In addition, the Advisory Council will work to bring national attention to the problem of violence against women and increase public awareness of the need for improved strategies to curb these crimes.
