A federal grand jury today returned an indictment in which Raymond A.C. Nip was charged with four years of tax evasion. According to the indictment, Nip failed to report income on his personal income tax returns for the years 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1997.

Elliot Enoki, United States Attorney for the District of Hawaii, said that the indictment alleges that Nip under-reported his taxable income during those years by $487,008, and thus avoided the payment of $183,170 in taxes which were due and owing on that income.  Each of the tax evasion counts carries a maximum penalty of five years of imprisonment, a $250,000.00 fine and costs of prosecution.

United States Attorney Enoki stated that indictments are not evidence of guilt, and that all defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.

This investigation has been conducted by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division, and the prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Lawrence Tong.
