PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release
October 26, 2001
United States Attorney JIM LETTEN announced today the conviction of ANDREW A. MARTIN after a week long trial. The jury found MARTIN guilty of conspiracy to defraud the IRS and income tax evasion involving approximately $500,000.00 in taxes.
Martin, former Executive Assistant to Governor Edwin W. Edwards, was convicted in May 2001 with Governor Edwards of RICO violations, extortion, and money laundering in connection with the riverboat gaming industry.
After a week long trial, the jury only deliberated for approximately 2½ hours before finding Martin guilty on all seven counts brought against him in the indictment. Martin faces a maximum sentence of thirty-five (35) years in jail, $1.75 million in fines and a term of supervised release. Prosecutors Fred Harper and Peter Strasser stated, “The speed with which the jury was able to reach its unanimous verdict of guilty on all counts reflects the overwhelming evidence gathered by the investigating Internal Revenue Service agents demonstrating multiple violations of federal tax laws.”
The case was handled by Assistant United States Attorneys Peter Strasser and Fred P. Harper, Jr.
