FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
United States Attorney Jeffrey G. Collins announced that a resident of Flint entered a plea of guilty in federal court today to charges that he had aided in the preparation of a false tax return.
Entering the guilty plea before United States District Judge Paul V. Gadola was Amos Lampley, 59, who resides in Flint and is employed by the Flint School District; he has also been self-employed, doing business as Quadruple A Income Tax Service.
Assistant United States Attorney Robert Haviland, who prosecuted the case, stated that "During his guilty plea Mr. Lampley admitted he had prepared a federal individual income tax return for one of his clients for the calendar year 1997 stating that the client had made charitable contributions totaling $14,541 and had incurred unreimbursed employee business expenses totaling $2,674, and that these statements were false in that the client's actual charitable contributions and unreimbursed employee business expenses were significantly less, as Mr. Lampley well knew and believed when he intentionally prepared the false return."
"Mr. Lampley was indicted on 31 counts of preparing false tax returns. Under the terms of a plea agreement, the government will dismiss the remaining counts of the indictment at the time of sentencing on the count to which he pleaded guilty today. Judge Gadola scheduled sentencing for September 12, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. The sentence will be imposed under the United States Sentencing Guidelines according to the nature of the offense and the criminal background, if any, of the defendant."
The case was investigated by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Internal Revenue Service.
