MANSFIELD TAX PREPARER PLEADS GUILTY TO FEDERAL CHARGE

United States Attorney Jane J. Boyle announced that Billy W. Deen, age 56, a resident of Mansfield, Texas, who operated an accounting practice known as Billy Deen's Bookkeeping and Income Tax Service, in Mansfield, pled guilty Friday in federal court to aiding and abetting the preparation of a false tax return, in violation of Title 26, United States Code, Section 7206(2). He faces a maximum statutory three-year term of imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. He is scheduled to be sentenced by the Honorable United States District Judge John H. McBryde on October 4, 2002.

According to papers filed in court, Billy W. Deen prepared false U.S. Individual Income Tax Returns (Form 1040) for clients by including false items totaling approximately $495,868. Deen admitted that he added false business rental expenses and false income to lower the amount of self-employment taxes owed to the IRS by his clients. As a result of the false tax returns prepared by Deen, for the years 1997 through 1999, the government suffered a total tax loss of approximately $51,739.

United States Attorney Boyle commended the investigative work of the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI), Dallas Field Office. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Richard Roper.
