Sally Quillian Yates, Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia; Gregory Jones, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation; and James D. Vickery, Special Agent in Charge, Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation, announce that a federal grand jury has returned an indictment, filed August 18, 2004, and unsealed today, charging WILLIAM C. CAMPBELL, age 51, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on corruption and tax charges. According to Yates: The indictment charges CAMPBELL, the former Mayor of Atlanta, with racketeering, corruption, bribery and tax fraud in violation of the RICO statute, mail and wire fraud statutes, federal and Georgia bribery statutes and tax laws. The conduct in the indictment spans from 1996 through 2004. The indictment charges CAMPBELL with accepting corrupt payments from multiple city contractors totaling in excess of $150,000 from multiple City contractors; concealing financial benefits he received from City contractors; soliciting and accepting illegal campaign contributions; defrauding campaign donors and creditors; and filing false tax returns. Members of the public are reminded that the indictment contains only allegations. A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges. The government has the burden of proving a defendant's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial. At that time, a jury will determine whether the evidence establishes beyond a reasonable doubt that CAMPBELL is guilty of the crimes charged.
