FORMER PEMBROKE RESIDENT CHARGED WITH FILING FALSE TAX RETURNS
Boston, MA... In an Information filed today in federal court, a former Pembroke resident was charged with failing to file or disclose on his tax returns more than $750,000 in gross receipts from his painting business during the years 1997 through 2000.
United States Attorney Michael J. Sullivan and Joseph A. Galasso, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation, announced that DALE E. MATHENY, age 42, formerly of 21 Congress Street, Pembroke, Massachusetts and currently of Sedalia, Missouri, was charged in a four-count Information with failure to file and filing false and fraudulent federal income tax returns.
According to the Information, MATHENY owned a Pembroke-based
painting business named Dale's Professional Painting Service. The Information
charges that during the year 1997, MATHENY unlawfully failed to file a U.S.
Individual Income Tax Return notwithstanding the fact that his business generated
more than $100,000 in gross business receipts during that year. The Information
further charges that during the years 1998, 1999, and 2000, MATHENY filed
false and fraudulent federal income tax returns that failed to disclose more
than $600,000 in additional gross receipts generated by his business.
If convicted, MATHENY faces up to 3 years' imprisonment on each of the counts
charging him with the filing of false returns for the years 1998 through 2000,
and up to 1 year in prison on the misdemeanor count charging him with the
failure to file a tax return in 1997.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael J. Pineault in Sullivan's Economic Crimes Unit.
