WOMAN WHO FAILED TO FILE TAX RETURN IS SENTENCED

Kevin J. O’Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that LINDA LANDAN, age 49, of Lake Forest, Illinois, was sentenced yesterday, March 14, by United States District Judge Janet C. Hall in Bridgeport to five years of probation and fined $20,000 for her failure to file a federal income tax return in 1999.

As explained in court and as set forth in court documents, LANDAN’s failure to file a 1999 tax return resulted in a tax loss of $56,650. Court records indicated that LANDAN has since filed returns and paid taxes for the years 1998 through 2001. However, Judge Hall noted that LANDAN has again failed to file tax returns for 2002 and 2003. As a condition of her probation, the Court ordered LANDAN to prepare and file lawful returns within 45 days, or face the possibility of a jail term for violation of probation. The Government noted during the sentencing proceeding that nothing in the plea agreement precluded the Government from pursuing further criminal tax charges resulting from LANDAN’s failure to file returns in 2002 and 2003.

This case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation Division and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Brian E. Spears.
