EAST HARTFORD WOMAN SENTENCED FOR MAKING FALSE CLAIMS FOR INCOME TAX REFUNDS

Kevin J. O’Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced today that JANET SCOTT, age 45, of 282 Park Avenue, East Hartford, Connecticut, who pled guilty on September 30, 2004 to a charge of making false and fraudulent claims to the Internal Revenue Service for income tax refunds, was sentenced in United States District Court in Hartford by United States District Judge Alfred V. Covello to four months and one day in prison to be followed by two years of supervised release. Special conditions of the Supervised Release included mental health and substance abuse treatment as deemed appropriate by the United States Probation Office. SCOTT was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $21,963.00.

During her guilty plea on September 30, 2004, SCOTT acknowledged that, for the years 1994 through 1998, 2000 and 2001, she filed income tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service, in her own name and in the names of her two sisters, to which she attached wage and tax withholding statements for a fictitious beauty salon known as Marie’s Salon. SCOTT admitted that Marie’s Salon was not an actual business, that neither she nor her sisters received wages from Marie’s Salon and Marie’s Salon did not pay employment taxes to the IRS during those years. SCOTT also admitted that she illegally claimed, and received, approximately $21,963.00 in tax refunds for those years.

The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division, and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Dave Vatti.
