DEFENDANT
SENTENCED FOR AIDING
AND ASSISTING IN THE PREPARATION OF FALSE TAX RETURNS
Marcos Daniel Jiménez, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida; and Brian Wimpling, Special Agent in Charge, Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation, announced today that defendant, Deloris McCray, a Palm Beach County resident, was sentenced to twelve (12) months imprisonment on January 25, 2005, by United States District Court Judge Daniel T.K. Hurley, for McCrays involvement in the preparation of false tax returns. On April 22, 2003, McCray was indicted on the ten (10) counts of wilfully preparing false and fraudulent tax returns, in violation of Title 26, United States Code, Section 7206(2). On February 24, 2004, McCray pleaded guilty to all of the counts.
This case stemmed from an investigation of a questionable tax refund scheme. After preparing the false Forms W-2 and tax returns, McCray referred the taxpayers to an electronic filer, either Jackson Hewitt Tax Service or H & R Block. The taxpayers provided the electronic filer with the false Form W-2s and completed Form 1040s. McCray received up to $3,000 for the preparation of each false tax return.
Mr. Jiménez
commended the investigative efforts of the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal
Investigation. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney
Lothrop Morris.
