FORMER MASSACHUSETTS RESIDENT MAKES INITIAL APPEARANCE
ON FEDERAL TAX CHARGES
Boston, MA... A Florida music performer, formerly a resident of Massachusetts, appeared for the first time in federal court on Friday, October 28, 2005, in connection with charges that he failed to file tax returns.
United States Attorney Michael J. Sullivan; Rebecca A. Sparkman, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation; and Kenneth W. Kaiser, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in New England, announced today that RAYMOND E. SCOTT, age 40, of Florida, was charged in an Information with two counts of willfully failing to file tax returns for the tax years 1999 and 2000.
At Friday's hearing, SCOTT told the Court that he is a part owner of "The Source" magazine and is a music performer. The Information alleges that SCOTT failed to file a tax return for the tax year 1999 despite receiving gross income of approximately $411,081. The Information also alleges that SCOTT failed to file a tax return for the tax year 2000 despite receiving gross income of approximately $1,064,567.
If convicted, SCOTT faces up to 1 year of imprisonment, to be followed by 1 year of supervised release, and a $25,000 fine on each count.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It is being prosecuted by Sullivan's Economic Crimes Unit.
The details contained in the Information are allegations. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
