BIRMINGHAM – A federal grand jury today indicted a Tuscaloosa man for an April credit union robbery in which about $156,171 was stolen, announced U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and FBI Special Agent in Charge Patrick J. Maley.

The two-count indictment filed in U. S. District Court charges RICHARD PATTON JR., 21, with armed robbery of the Tuscaloosa Credit Union on April 26. The indictment also charges Patton with brandishing a firearm during the robbery.

The maximum prison term for robbery of a credit union is 25 years. Punishment for brandishing a firearm during the robbery is at least seven years, consecutive to any sentence on the robbery count.

Assistant U.S. Attorney L. James Weil, Jr. is prosecuting this case.

Members of the public are reminded that the indictment contains only charges. A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and it will be the government’s burden to prove a defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
