BIRMINGHAM -- A federal grand jury today indicted a 46-year-old Birmingham woman for transporting and possessing child pornography, U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and U.S. Secret Service Special Agent in Charge Roy Sexton announced.

The indictment, filed in U.S. District Court, charges LISA MICHELLE RUNYAN with one count of transporting child pornography across state lines in April 2007. Count Two charges her with possessing child pornography in December 2009.

Transporting child pornography carries a minimum sentence of five years in prison and a maximum of 20 years. Both the transportation and the possession charges carry a maximum fine of $250,000. Conviction of these offenses will require registration by the defendant as a sex offender.

                        “Child pornography documents the abuse of innocent children,” Vance said.  “Although that lost innocence cannot be restored, a just prosecution is a step in the right direction toward healing for the victim and protection for society,” she said.

The Mountain Brook Police Department and special agents of the Secret Service worked together in the investigation that led to charges in this case. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura D. Hodge.

Members of the public are reminded that the indictment contains only charges. A defendant is presumed innocent, and it will be the government’s burden to prove a defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
