BIRMINGHAM – A federal judge today sentenced a Birmingham man to 11 years in prison for an armed car-jacking at a Birmingham gas station last year, announced U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and ATF Special Agent in Charge Glenn Anderson.

U.S. District Judge Sharon Lovelace Blackburn sentenced DOMINIQUE RASHAWN MCCORD, 24, for car-jacking, using a firearm during a crime of violence and being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. McCord pleaded guilty to the charges in November.

“Convicted felons who continue to resort to guns and violence need to be taken off the street,” Vance said. “The ATF and the Birmingham and Montgomery Police Departments should be commended for doing that with Mr. McCord.”

McCord stole a Dodge Stratus at gunpoint on Jan. 1, 2010, as the driver of the car got out at a service station on Second Avenue North, according to court documents. McCord was arrested the next day in Montgomery when the stolen Dodge was stopped for going the wrong way on a one-way street. McCord was a passenger in the car, and police found a Colt .357-caliber revolver underneath the front passenger seat, according to court records.

The case was investigated by Birmingham Police, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Montgomery Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph P. Montminy prosecuted the case.
