WITH CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 5, 2010

ANTHONY P. MAURER, age 60, a resident of Independence, Louisiana, was charged in a one-count bill of information for deprivation of rights under color of law, announced U.S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to the bill of information, MAURER caused his election officials to deprive qualified voters in Tangipahoa Parish to have their votes tabulated and counted in the February 9, 2008 election.

If convicted, MAURER faces a maximum sentence of one (1) year, a $10,000 fine, and six (6) months supervised release.

U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that a bill of information is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case was investigated by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Irene González.
