TWO ALIENS SENTENCED FOR BEING STOWAWAYS ON A VESSEL
CESAR AUGUSTO ANGULO ROSSI, age 30, and JAMES DANIEL TORRES CARDENAS, age 33, both residents of Colombia, were each sentenced today in federal court by U. S. District Judge Ivan L. R. Lemelle to approximately five months imprisonment, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Lemelle ordered that ROSSI and CARDENAS each be placed on two (2) years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment, during which time the defendantS will be under federal supervision and risk additional imprisonment should they violate any terms of the supervised release.
According to court documents, on December 16, 2009, ROSSI and CARDENAS pled guilty to one count of an indictment admitting that secreted themselves aboard a vessel in Venezuela without consent and remained aboard the vessel until it entered Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana.
The case was investigated by the U. S. Customs and Border Protection. The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Robert Weir.
