NEW ORLEANS WOMAN SENTENCED FOR THEFT OF GOVERNMENT FUNDS
KAREN TURNER, age 48, a resident of New Orleans, was sentenced to three (3) years probation by U. S. District Judge Martin L.C. Feldman after pleading guilty to one-count of theft of government funds, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten. In addition, the defendant was ordered to pay $4,244,41 in restitution.
According to court records, TURNER admitted that she filed a fraudulent claim with FEMA claiming that her 2000 Ford Contour was destroyed in Hurricane Katrina. Based on this fraudulent claim, TURNER obtained FEMA vehicle reimbursement payments in the amount of approximately $4,244.41 for which she was not entitled..
The case was investigated by the United States Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Andre’ Jones.
