NEW ORLEANS MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO FEDERAL GUN CHARGE
CORNELIUS BUTLER, age 23, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, pled guilty to a one-count indictment for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon before United States District Court Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to court documents, on February 24, 2010, BUTLER was in possession of a Glock Model 36, .45 caliber pistol in the Eastern District of Louisiana. BUTLER was previously convicted on January 29, 2009, in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court for possession of cocaine, a felony. As such, BUTLER was prohibited by federal law from possessing a firearm.
Sentencing is scheduled for March 2, 2011. BUTLER faces a maximum term of imprisonment of ten (10) years, a maximum fine of the greater of $250,000 or twice the gross loss to any victim or twice the gross gain to the defendant, and up to three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
The case was investigated by the Gretna Police Department, the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Edward J. Rivera of the Violent Crime Unit.
