ILLEGAL ALIEN PLEADS GUILTY TO ATTEMPTING TO SHIP AMMUNITION WITHOUT WRITTEN NOTICE TO A CONTRACT CARRIER
MARY CRUZ PORTILLO-MEJIA, age 25, a citizen of Honduras, pled guilty in federal court today before U. S. District Judge Eldon E. Fallon to a one-count superseding bill of information charging her with shipping ammunition without written notice to the contract carrier, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to court documents, on March 28, 2011, PORTILLO, an illegal alien, knowingly delivered 2,175 rounds of ammunition to a contract carrier for shipment to Honduras, without written notice to the contract carrier.
PORTILLO faces a maximum statutory penalty of five (5) years imprisonment, a fine of $250,000., and three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment. Sentencing has been scheduled for October 13, 2011.
The case was investigated by the Gulf Coast Border Enforcement Security Task Force (BEST).
The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant U. S. Attorney Robert Weir.
