ILLEGAL ALIEN SENTENCED FOR ATTEMPTING TO SMUGGLE A FIREARM FROM THE UNITED STATESAND REENTRY OF A REMOVED ALIEN
MILTON EDILBERTO ESCOTO-GALINDO, age 29, a citizen of Honduras, was sentenced today in federal court by U. S. District Judge Lance M. Africk to approximately seven months imprisonment, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Africk ordered that ESCOTO be placed on two (2) years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment, during which time the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should he violate any terms of his supervised release.
According to court documents, on July 7, 2011, ESCOTO, an illegal alien, pled guilty to two counts of an indictment admitting he fraudulently and knowingly concealed and facilitated the transportation of a firearm in March 2011, with the intent to export that firearm from the United States to Honduras, contrary to law. ESCOTO also admitted to being an alien who had previously been removed from the United States and was found within the Eastern District of Louisiana, without having obtained consent from the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to reapply for admission to the United States.
The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and U. S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Robert Weir.
