BALTIMORE MAN SENTENCED TO TEN YEARS IN PRISON FOR BEING A FELON IN POSSESSION OF A FIREARM

Man Fired At Police, Leading to High Speed Chase

BALTIMORE, Maryland - Tremaine Carter, age 28, of Baltimore, was sentenced today to ten years in prison followed by three years of supervised release for being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein. U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake ordered that the 33 months that Carter has served in state prison be deducted from the 10 year sentence.

According to the statement of facts presented to the court at his guilty plea on April 20, 2006, on September 26, 2003, Baltimore City Police officers observed Carter driving a car while unrestrained by a seat belt. The officers made efforts to stop the vehicle, and Carter, who was alone in the vehicle, began to pull over. According to officer statements, Carter leaned out the window and fired three shots at both officers who were within a few feet of him and then fled in the vehicle at a high rate of speed. At some point during the ensuing chase, Carter’s vehicle made contact with a pursuing police cruiser, causing Carter’s vehicle to spin out of control and into a limousine. A passenger in that limousine suffered a broken ankle in the collision. Carter was removed from his vehicle and officers found a handgun between his knees with three spent casings inside. A search of the automobile revealed bullets and shotgun shells in the glove box and 7 zip-lock bags, each containing crack, on the front floorboard. At the time of this incident, the defendant had been convicted of a crime punishable by a term of imprisonment exceeding one year.

United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein thanked the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Baltimore City Police Department for their investigative work in this case. Mr. Rosenstein also praised Assistant United States Attorney Debra Dwyer, who prosecuted the case.
