MARYLAND MAN CHARGED WITH CHILD EXPLOITATION IS CAPTURED
Recently Featured On TV Show “America’s Most Wanted”
BALTIMORE, Maryland - United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein announces that today Robert M. Carey, age 52, of Bowie, Maryland was arrested after turning himself in to U.S. officials in Rome, Italy. Carey fled the United States after his December 21, 2005 indictment on charges of the sexual exploitation of children and possession of child pornography. Carey was featured on the January 21, 2006 television show “America’s Most Wanted.”
“We are grateful for the assistance America’s Most Wanted provided to law enforcement in this case,” said United States Attorney Rosenstein. The three-count indictment alleges that Carey permitted and encouraged a child under his control to engage in sexually explicit conduct in order to produce a visual depiction of that conduct which was then shipped in interstate commerce using a computer; and that he possessed videotapes, DVDs and compact discs containing images of child pornography. As a result of those offenses, the third count of the indictment states that Carey will forfeit to the United States any material containing visual depictions of child pornography and any property used or intended to be used to transmit child pornography.
Carey is detained and will have a removal hearing tomorrow morning in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn, New York, where it is anticipated that he will be ordered to be returned to Maryland.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein thanked the U.S. Department of Commerce - Office of Inspector General for its investigative work. Mr. Rosenstein also praised Assistant United States Attorney David I. Salem, who is prosecuting the case.
