UPPER MARLBORO MAN SENTENCED TO 33 MONTHS FOR STEALING ATMs IN PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY AND VIRGINIA

Defendant Ordered to Pay Restitution of $229,000 in Losses

Baltimore, Maryland - U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake sentenced Charles Edward Harrison, age 48, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland yesterday to 33 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for conspiring to commit bank larceny in connection with stealing Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and their contents, announced United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein. Judge Blake also ordered Harrison to pay restitution of $229,000.

Harrison and five other defendants were indicted on March 1, 2006 for conspiracy to commit bank larceny by stealing several ATMs in various locations in Maryland and Virginia. According to his plea agreement, Harrison and his conspirators stole an ATM and its contents of: $19,000 on March 11, 2003 from the Food Lion store at 9500 Crain Highway in Upper Marlboro, Maryland; $25,000 on April 9, 2003 from the Paceway Convenience Center at 1334 J. Defense Highway in Crofton, Maryland; $30,000 in cash on August 18, 2003 from BB&T Bank at 6901 Laurel Bowie Road, Bowie Maryland; and cash on February 14, 2005 from the Davis General Store at 7600 Clifton Road in Fairfax Park, Virginia resulting in a loss, including the value of the stolen ATM, of $30,000.

Additionally, on July 16, 2003, Harrison and others attempted to steal an ATM from the Bank of America at 1708 Old Bridge Road in Woodbridge, Virginia. Police arrived after the ATM was removed from its foundation, but before it could be removed from the premises. The value of the destroyed ATM was $50,000.

Along with the approximate cost of replacing the five ATMs stolen or attempted to be stolen, the total amount of loss attributed to Harrison is $229,000.

All of the co-conspirators have pleaded guilty to related charges and been sentenced, except ringleader Tracy Fletcher, age 30, whose sentencing has not yet been set.

United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein commended the investigative work performed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Mr. Rosenstein thanked Assistant U.S. Attorneys Stephanie Gallagher and Michael Leotta, who are prosecuting the case.
